Types Of Pasta

Pasta is certainly a household favourite not only in Italy but in Sri Lanka as well. We’ve got pasta in all shapes and sizes, but do you know what these shapes and sizes are all about? The seemingly endless types of pasta can be divided into categories, namely, long pasta, short pasta, stuffed pasta, sheet pasta and dumpling pasta.

Long pasta

Long pasta is what you need to twirl your fork to be able to get a spoon full in your mouth. The long ribbons of pasta are usually best cooked with rich white sauces with a few small but chunky ingredients. Have you come across the following long pasta before?

Short pasta

Short pasta is smaller in length come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. This pasta goes great with sauces that include chunks of meat in it. Each shape of small pasta captures the taste of the sauces in its own unique way. Do these names sound familiar to you?

  • Elbows
  • Farfalle

Stuffed portions of pasta

Did you know that pasta can be stuffed and cooked as well? Imagine biting into a delicious minced meat filling or an explosion of cheese in your mouth! These pastas are stuffed with mouth-watering fillings, boiled and served with various sauces and herbs for added flavour.

Sheet pasta

Just as the name suggests, this pasta looks like a thin sheet of paper. It is usually layered with cheese, meat and vegetable and is better known as Lasagne. You even get precooked sheets of Lasagne where you can pop them in the oven straight away and the sauces will help it cook just right…no boiling required.

Dumpling pasta

Well, all you pasta enthusiasts out there would find it interesting to know that the base for this pasta is made of potato, flour and egg. The result? A dense dumpling shaped pasta to play with when it comes to flavours and this more commonly known as Gnocchi!
