Widely known as bite-sized dumplings, Momos became a popular delicacy among Asians, which resulted in variants of the dish being produced in Nepal. The word ‘mome’ translates into cooking by steaming in Newari, one of the oldest languages in Nepal, signifying the dish’s historical background which dates back to the olden days of the 14th century, served in almost every restaurant in the country. 7 Star presents its secret formula to make healthier Momos using 7 Star Chakki Atta Flour for an indulgent dinner meal for the whole family. So, let’s get cooking those juicy dumplings with spoonsful of your favourite filling.
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 7 Star Chakki Atta Flour – 2 cups
- Oil – 2 teaspoons
- Salt
- Water (for kneading)
For the filling:
- Oil – 2 teaspoons
- Finely chopped garlic – 2 cloves
- Finely chopped onion – 1
- Shredded cabbage – 2 cups
- Grated carrot – 1
- Vinegar – 1 tablespoon
- Crushed pepper – ½ teaspoon
- Soy sauce – 1 tablespoon
- Chilli sauce – 1 tablespoon
- Salt
Method
- Combine 7 Star Chakki Atta Flour, oil, salt and water, and knead well until a dough is formed. Let it rest for an hour.
- In a pan, add oil and sauté the garlic until golden brown and add the chopped onion.
- Next, add cabbage, carrot, vinegar, soy sauce, chilli sauce and salt. Mix well until your taste buds are pleased with the flavour of the filling.
- Knead the Momos dough again for one minute and separate it into balls.
- Flatten each ball, dust them with flour and start rolling them out using a rolling pin until a circle of 4-5 inch diameter is formed.
- Add a tablespoon of the filling to the centre of the rolled-out dough and pleat it to form a bundle-like shape (dumpling/Momo shape).
- Steam the Momos for 10-12 minutes and serve them hot with a sauce of your choice.
